The Vision of Slaughter

9 Then He cried out in my ^[a]presence with a loud ^(A)voice, saying, “Come forward, you ^[b]executioners of the city, each with his weapon of destruction in his hand.” ² And behold, six men came from the direction of the upper gate which faces north, each with his smashing weapon in his hand; and among them was ^(B)one man clothed in linen with a scribe’s kit at his waist. And they came in and stood beside the bronze altar.

³ Then the ^(C)glory of the God of Israel ascended from the cherub on which it had been, to the threshold of the ^[c]temple. And He called to the man clothed in linen at whose waist was the scribe’s kit. ⁴ And the Lord said to him, “Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and make a ^(D)mark on the foreheads of the people who ^(E)groan and sigh over all the abominations which are being committed in its midst.” ⁵ But to the others He said in my ^[d]presence, “Go through the city after him and strike; do not let your eye have pity and do not spare. ^6 [e]Utterly ^(F)kill old men, young men, female virgins, little children, and women, but do not ^(G)touch any person on whom is the mark; and you shall ^(H)start from My sanctuary.” So they started with the ^[f]elders who were before the ^[g]temple. ⁷ He also said to them, “^(I)Defile the ^[h]temple and fill the courtyards with the dead. Go out!” So they went out and struck and killed the people in the city. ⁸ And as they were striking the people and I alone was left, I ^(J)fell on my face and cried out, ^[i]saying, “^(K)Oh, Lord ^[j]God! Are You going to destroy the entire remnant of Israel ^[k]by pouring out Your wrath on Jerusalem?”

⁹ Then He said to me, “The guilt of the house of Israel and Judah is very, very great, and the land is ^(L)filled with blood, and the city is ^(M)full of perversion; for ^(N)they say, ‘The Lord has abandoned the land, and the Lord does not see!’ ¹⁰ But as for Me, ^(O)My eye will have no pity nor will I spare, but ^(P)I will bring their conduct upon their heads.”

¹¹ Then behold, the man clothed in linen, at whose waist was the scribe’s kit, ^[l]reported, saying, “I have done just as You have commanded me.”

¹² So, as those who have been ^(A)chosen of God, holy and beloved, ^(B)put on a ^(C)heart of compassion, kindness, ^(D)humility, gentleness, and ^[a](E)patience; ^13 (F)bearing with one another, and ^(G)forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; ^(H)just as the Lord forgave you, so must you do also. ¹⁴ In addition to all these things put on love, which is ^[b](I)the perfect bond of ^(J)unity. ¹⁵ Let ^(K)the peace of Christ, to which you were ^[c]indeed called in ^(L)one body, ^[d]rule in your hearts; and ^[e]be thankful. ¹⁶ Let ^(M)the word of ^[f]Christ richly dwell within you, ^[g]with all wisdom ^(N)teaching and admonishing ^[h]one another ^(O)with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, ^(P)singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God. ^17 (Q)Whatever you do in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, ^(R)giving thanks through Him to God the Father.

Family Relations

^18 (S)Wives, ^(T)be subject to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. ^19 (U)Husbands, love your wives and do not become bitter against them. ^20 (V)Children, obey your parents in everything, for this is pleasing ^[i]to the Lord. ^21 (W)Fathers, do not ^[j]antagonize your children, so that they will not become discouraged.

^22 [k](X)Slaves, obey those who are your ^[l]human masters in everything, ^(Y)not with ^[m]eye-service, as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord. ²³ Whatever you do, do your work ^[n]heartily, ^(Z)as for the Lord and not for people, ^24 (AA)knowing that it is from the Lord that you will receive the reward ^[o]of ^(AB)the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you ^(AC)serve. ²⁵ For ^(AD)the one who does wrong will receive the consequences of the wrong which he has done, and ^[p](AE)that without partiality.

4 Masters, grant your slaves justice and fairness, ^(AF)knowing that you also have a Master in heaven.

Evil Rulers to Be Judged

11 Now the ^(A)Spirit lifted me up and brought me to the east gate of the Lord’s house which faced eastward. And behold, there were twenty-five men at the entrance of the gate, and among them I saw Jaazaniah son of Azzur and ^(B)Pelatiah son of Benaiah, leaders of the people. ² Then He said to me, “Son of man, these are the men who devise wrongdoing and ^(C)give evil advice in this city, ³ who say, ‘The time is not near to build houses. ^[a]This ^(D)city is the pot and we are the meat.’ ⁴ Therefore, ^(E)prophesy against them, prophesy, son of man!”

⁵ Then the Spirit of the Lord fell upon me, and He said to me, “Say, ‘This is what the Lord says: “This is how you think, house of Israel, for ^(F)I know ^[b]your ^(G)thoughts. ⁶ You have ^(H)multiplied your slain in this city, and filled its streets with ^[c]them.” ⁷ Therefore, this is what the Lord ^[d]God says: “Your ^(I)slain whom you have laid in the midst of ^[e]the city are the meat and this city is the pot; but ^[f]I will ^(J)bring you out of it. ⁸ You have ^(K)feared a sword; so I will ^(L)bring a sword upon you,” the Lord God declares. ⁹ “And I will bring you out of the midst of ^[g]the city, and hand you over to ^(M)strangers, and ^(N)execute judgments against you. ¹⁰ You will ^(O)fall by the sword. I will judge you to the ^(P)border of Israel; so you shall know that I am the Lord. ¹¹ This city will ^(Q)not be a pot for you, nor will you be meat in the midst of it; I will judge you to the border of Israel. ¹² So you will know that I am the Lord; for you have not walked in My statutes, nor have you ^(R)executed My ordinances, but you have acted in accordance with the ordinances of the ^(S)nations around you.”’”

¹³ Now it came about, as I prophesied, that ^(T)Pelatiah son of Benaiah died. Then I fell on my face and cried out with a loud voice, and said, “^(U)Oh, Lord God! Will You bring the remnant of Israel to a complete destruction?”

The High Priestly Prayer

17 Jesus spoke these things; and ^(A)raising His eyes to heaven, He said, “Father, the hour has come; ^(B)glorify Your Son, so that the Son may glorify You, ² just as ^(C)You gave Him authority over all ^[a]mankind, so that ^[b](D)to all whom You have given Him, ^(E)He may give eternal life. ³ And this is eternal life, that they may know You, ^(F)the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom ^(G)You have sent. ^4 (H)I glorified You on the earth ^[c](I)by accomplishing the work which You have given Me to do. ⁵ And now You, Father, ^(J)glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had ^(K)with You before the world existed.

⁶ “^(L)I have revealed Your name to the men whom ^(M)You gave Me out of the world; they were ^(N)Yours and You gave them to Me, and they have ^(O)followed Your word. ⁷ Now they have come to know that everything which You have given Me is from You; ⁸ for ^(P)the words which You gave Me ^(Q)I have given to them; and they received them and truly understood that ^(R)I came forth from You, and they believed that ^(S)You sent Me. ^9 (T)I ask on their behalf; ^(U)I do not ask on behalf of the world, but on the behalf of those whom ^(V)You have given Me, because ^(W)they are Yours; ¹⁰ and ^(X)all things that are Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine; and I have been glorified in them. ¹¹ I am no longer going to be in the world; and yet ^(Y)they themselves are in the world, and ^(Z)I am coming to You. ^(AA)Holy Father, keep them in Your name, the name ^(AB)which You have given Me, so that ^(AC)they may be one just as We are. ¹² While I was with them, I was keeping them in Your name, ^(AD)which You have given Me; and I guarded them, and ^(AE)not one of them perished except ^(AF)the ^[d]son of destruction, so that the ^(AG)Scripture would be fulfilled.

The Disciples in the World

¹³ But now ^(AH)I am coming to You; and ^(AI)these things I speak in the world so that they may have My ^(AJ)joy made full in themselves. ¹⁴ I have given them Your word; and ^(AK)the world has hated them because ^(AL)they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. ¹⁵ I am not asking You to take them out of the world, but to keep them away from ^[e](AM)the evil one. ^16 (AN)They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. ^17 (AO)Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth. ¹⁸ Just as ^(AP)You sent Me into the world, ^(AQ)I also sent them into the world. ¹⁹ And for their sakes I ^(AR)sanctify Myself, so that they themselves also may be ^(AS)sanctified ^(AT)in truth.

²⁰ “I am not asking on behalf of these alone, but also for those who believe in Me through their word, ²¹ that they may all be one; ^(AU)just as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, ^(AV)so that the world may ^[f]believe that ^(AW)You sent Me.

Disciples’ Future Glory

²² The ^(AX)glory which You have given Me I also have given to them, so that they may be one, just as We are one; ^23 (AY)I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected ^[g]in unity, so that the world may ^[h]know that ^(AZ)You sent Me, and You ^(BA)loved them, just as You loved Me. ²⁴ Father, I desire that ^(BB)they also, whom You have given Me, ^(BC)be with Me where I am, so that they may see My ^(BD)glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before ^(BE)the foundation of the world.

²⁵ “^(BF)Righteous Father, ^[i]although ^(BG)the world has not known You, yet I have known You; and these have known that ^(BH)You sent Me; ²⁶ and ^(BI)I have made Your name known to them, and will make it known, so that ^(BJ)the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them.”
